New to noren? How to plan yours — 7 steps
1. Measure the opening
Measure the inside width and the height of your doorway or space. Most interior doors in Europe are 70–90 cm wide and about 200 cm high.
2. Decide the width and height
- Width: the noren width is not always the same as the opening. Inside a door frame on a tension rod, choose about the same width or a few cm narrower so it hangs freely. Hung on the wall above the opening, choose a little wider so it covers the frame.
- Height: about 1/3–1/2 of the door height (60–90 cm for a 200 cm door) keeps the space open and airy. About 2/3–3/4 (130–160 cm) gives more privacy. Leave 20–40 cm above the floor — the figure in the preview shows the scale.

3. Choose the number of panels
A noren is split into panels so you can walk through. Two panels suit a standard door; choose three or more for wide openings and room dividers.
4. Pick the fabric
- Cotton: soft and warm, gently filters the light.
- Linen: crisp and airy, lets light and breeze through.
- Re:Chirimen: a fine crepe texture with a subtle sheen.
With Custom, tell us your preferred fabric in the order form — we will suggest the best match for your design.
5. Choose the color and design
Solid color, two-tone gradient or a family crest (kamon). With Custom, you can also add a pattern, your own text and your own image.
6. Choose the top and get a rod ready
- Rod pocket (fukuro-nui): a sewn sleeve the rod slides through. Clean and simple.
- Loops (chichi): fabric loops along the top that the rod passes through. Available with Custom.
- Rod: you will need a rod to hang your noren. Use one of your own, or ask us to add a rod to your order (extra charge). A tension rod fits inside a door frame with no drilling; on a flat wall, rest a wooden pole on two hooks — adhesive hooks work well in rented homes. Make sure the rod fits through the pocket or loops.
