Kasuri (絣) is Japan's version of ikat — one of the world's oldest resist-dyeing techniques. Before the cloth is woven, the individual threads are bound and dyed in precise patterns. When woven together, these threads produce the fabric's defining quality: edges that blur and bleed, as if the pattern itself is breathing.
The Character of Kasuri
- Intentional imperfection — the soft, cloud-like edges of kasuri patterns are a deliberate feature, not a flaw. This quality is called kasure (暈れ): the beautiful blur.
- Deep indigo tones — traditional kasuri is woven in indigo (ai-zome), with the undyed threads forming the pattern in white or pale blue.
- Woven-in pattern — unlike printed fabric, kasuri patterns are structural. The design is embedded in the weave itself and will not fade or peel.
- Folk textile heritage — kasuri weaving developed across Japan from the Edo period. Regional styles include Iyo kasuri (Ehime), Kurume kasuri (Fukuoka), and Bingo kasuri (Hiroshima).

Our Kasuri Noren
We source kasuri cloth from established weavers in western Japan. Each bolt is hand-inspected for weave quality and colour consistency before cutting. Because the pattern is woven rather than printed, we work with you on panel sizing to ensure the kasuri motif aligns beautifully across the finished piece.
Please note: due to the nature of ikat weaving, exact pattern placement and edge definition vary between bolts. This variation is an inherent and valued quality of kasuri.
